Leigh RMI 2, Ashton United 1 LEIGH RMI opened their cup account with a well-deserved 2-1 win over Ashton United at Hilton Park last night.
The victory was more emphatic than the scoreline suggests, with the premiership side always too good for their first division rivals.
"It was a good work-out for us and when you take into account the many changes I had to make we played some good stuff," said manager Steve Waywell, who blooded youngster Ross McBain.
Liam Carr had an outstanding game scoring first and making the second although Tony Black rattled the bar from a free kick before Carr's opener in the 20th minute.
Steve Jones dribbled his way down the right before pulling a telling cross into the box that Carr finished well into the bottom corner.
Midway through the second-half and the roles were reversed. This time it was Carr down the left before finding Jones, who had the easy job of tapping into an empty net.
In between Ashton had drawn level on the hour when Paul Jones was guilty of a trip in the area and Mick Doherty finished from the spot, although goalkeeper Dave Felgate got a hand to it.
