ON Wednesday, September 15, I read in the BEN that 800 possible jobs were at risk because the planning officers looked likely to turn down two plans for out of town shopping centres. Then, on September 17, I was surprised to read that a decision was to be overturned and given the go-ahead. Well, we have an excellent town centre shopping area that can compete with any other town in this country and I hope those who want to give the go-ahead to these plans do not live to regret it.
I have lived in a number of towns in this country and have seen what happens to town centres when out-of-town shopping areas set up. After a short time you see the main shopping area shops losing customers, then shops start to be boarded up and parts of the town start to die off.
DO WE WANT THIS IN BOLTON?
I agree with Cllr Foster. Check what effect this would have on our excellent and pleasant shopping centre in our town.
