TWO primary schools are celebrating after receiving top marks following their Ofsted reports.

Inspectors put both Gillibrand in Chorley and Brindle Gregson Lane in Hoghton under the microscope.

Their report on Gillibrand said: "The school has a good ethos. It is purposely committed to high academic achievement.

"The school has a supportive atmosphere, created by teachers, support staff and visiting specialists who all know and understand their pupils well."

The Ofsted team congratulated the school on its results in national tests for children aged 11.

They also commented on the superb range of extra-curricular activities on offer and the excellent relationships between home and school life.

Inspectors reported: "The headteacher is a strong leader who has a clear vision . . .

"The governing body carries out its responsibilities conscientiously."

Mr Duckworth said: "It is a great school. I have been here just over two years and we regard it as a family set up, but it is nice to know they recognised that the standards of achievement are very high."

Brindle Gregson Lane Primary School was said to have improved significantly since its last inspection in 1995.

The school won praise for creating a community atmosphere and working in partnership with parents. Academic standards are said to be on a par with national levels.

According to head teacher Vivienne Clark: "The outcome of the inspection is a reflection of the teamwork that exists within our school."

"I should like to thank the staff, governors, pupils and parents for their wonderful support. Together we can continue to move the school forward for the benefit of all our pupils." Head teacher of Gillibrand Paul Duckworth with Gemma McCarthy, Shannon Smith, Thomas Wain and Robert Crossland.
