TEN part-time firemen arrested by police probing allegations that they made hoax calls and started fires to increase their wages, have been released without charge.

A file on the case will now be forwarded to the Crown Prosecution Service. A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police today said the investigation into the case will continue.

The retained firemen - who are all based at Horwich Fire Station - were arrested at their homes early yesterday. They were quizzed throughout the day at separate police stations before being released without charge last night.

The arrest of the retained firemen followed an 11 month police investigation. Detectives were called in by fire chiefs to investigate the allegations.
