THE number is up for WH and BN - the traditional car registration letters. From October 1, Bolton will share its distinctive letters with new cars in Bury, Rochdale, Blackburn and parts of the former Lancashire County Council area, to tie in with a centralised computer system. The first BN car was registered in 1904, and the BN series was later succeeded by the WH series.

THE old question of Sunday entertainment raised its head again at yesterday's meeting of the Parks Committee when a letter was read from the Bolton and District Council of Christian Congregations expressing strong disapproval of the use in Moss Bank Park on Sundays of 'mechanical amusement' for children, operated for private profit. Ald Dunning said that there was no evidence that the introduction of these amusements had had a detrimental effect on the Sunday schools. After a discussion the committee decided to 'receive' the letter having noted its contents.

A VERY desirable improvement has been introduced upon the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, in the publication of the names of stations in black letters upon the glass of the lamps. Few passengers have not, at some time or other, felt the want of some better means of ascertaining a station's name, especially on dark nights, when it is impossible to see the painted board; and it is to be hoped that public convenience will prove the company's plan satisfactory.
