A LANGUAGE college has made in-roads to become the first school in Lancashire to sign up to the Make the Difference Road Safety Strategy.

Croston's Bishop Rawstorne officially pledged to become the first in the county by reinforcing the Make a Difference objectives.

These are to promote all national and local road safety campaigns, actively encourage the pledged support of all staff, to improve the safety of students travelling to and from college and to work in partnership with Lancashire County Council and Holmeswood Coaches to produce a CD-ROM which promotes safety procedures for students travelling on school buses.

The college also plans to introduce a bus monitor scheme where nominated prefects keep a watchful gaze for any accidents.

Chorley county councillor Alan Whittaker, Lancashire's education vice-chairman, said: "As a local county councillor I am delighted that Bishop Rawstorne has decided to get on board with Make a Difference.

"I am sure that the active support of the governors, teachers and students will help make real inroads into improving safety on Lancashire's highways."

Bishop Rawstorne's headteacher, George Lloyd, added: "The safety of our students is our number one priority, so signing up to Make a Difference made perfect sense.
