SIR,- Driving sheep through Bolton traffic ought not to be allowed. A flock of sheep was being driven down Bank-st. on Tuesday afternoon, and it was painful to see one or two of them keep sinking to the ground. The drovers kept picking them up and prodding them along. One got a front foot under the wheel of a bus, which had to be backed to release it. Surely in these days, and in a town like Bolton, they ought to be taken to the slaughter in a more merciful way. - Yours etc., Mrs Tonge, 12, Parkdale-rd., Bolton.

LAST night, in the dining hall of the Workhouse, Fishpool, Mr and Mrs Greenhalgh, the master and matron of the institution, were presented with a silver tea and coffee service by the inmates on the occasion of their resignation, after having been in office about a quarter of a century. On rising to accept the present, Mr Greenhalgh was loudly applauded. He said he was thankful for the present, and he did not know that he had anything in his house that he would prize more than their gift. He had tried to do them good both temporarily and spiritually, and he trusted though separated on earth, that they would all endeavour to meet together in heaven. (Applause).
