GARAGES in Smithills, Heaton and Halliwell are being targeted by thieves.
Police are warning there have already been several break-ins and want householders to be on the look-out.
On several occasions, the thieves have used ladders or drainpipes to climb into the homes through open upstairs windows.
As a result, police are reminding people to keep tools and other items secure, leaving a bare minimum in the garage.
In addition, they are recommending residents fit alarms to their garages.
A spokesman said: "To give the garage added protection fit a stand-alone alarm system, or even connect it to the system in the house.
"The stand alone systems cost from £15 to £45 and activate as soon as anybody goes into the premises.
"This usually frightens thieves, and alerts the householder and their neighbours.
"Usually thieves will then make a getaway to avoid being caught."
