A RECENT workshop event hosted by BAE Systems at Broughton reinforced how important it was for small and medium sized manufacturers to get ahead in Information Communications Technology (ICT) and e-commerce.

ICT and e-literacy are becoming a pre-requisite for smaller firms supplying bigger companies.

The message that came across from the BAE Systems event was that unless supply companies were willing to change and be in a position to communicate and work with BAE using new technologies, it would become increasingly difficult for them to be considered as a supplier of the future.

In this instance, BAE are eager to work with their suppliers to assist, wherever possible, in developing their capabilities.

Local firms like Bellhouse Hartwell are using new technologies to excellent effect in trading with larger partners.

During the presentation, a case study dealt with the changes in business trading methods between BAE and Bellhouse Hartwell and the significant benefits achieved through the application of ICT and use of the internet.

Help is at hand for local manufacturing companies through the IN-TIME 2000 project, which provides grants of up to 50 per cent to help them keep pace with their competitors by making effective use of ICT.

The programme is supported by the European Regional Development Fund and offers participating companies an easy route to expert help and advice.
