BOLTON businesses which tackle the litter menace are to be recognised in new council awards. Companies which produce a lot of packaging and waste, such as fast food outlets and newsagents, will be encouraged to take part in the Tidy Business Awards. They will reward responsible firms with a Premier Award for those that "go one step" further.
The scheme will be monitored by Bolton Council's People and Places Programme and firms putting themselves forward will be inspected unannounced.
"The Awards are all about encouraging businesses to be responsible about waste, especially those which deal with packaging," said Cllr Guy Harkin, Cabinet Member for Environment.
"It's about us all working together to help improve the environment we live in.
"There are too many untidy spots in Bolton, but it is only by educating people and changing attitudes that we will solve this problem."
The awards will be free to enter. Winners will receive certificates, window stickers and will have the opportunity to promote their award on business materials
