EIGHT elderly women, aged between 65 and 90, were taken to hospital today when fire broke our in an attic at the Ladymead private nursing home in Westwood Road, Bolton.
VIEWERS will get a new-look weather forecast on BBC television from Saturday. Out go black spots and triangles. In come shiny yellow suns, little fluffy clouds and blue teardrops, which will represent rain on the weather map.
STOCKS Park House, a new 52-bed home for the elderly at Horwich, opened today. The £200,000 plus purpose-built home at Stocks Park Drive, is intended specifically for infirm and handicapped residents.

MR Winston Churchill today called for the immediate creation of a European army, to act in full co-operation with the United States and Canada. 'There is not a day to be lost,' he said, urging the European Assembly in Strasbourg to take the initial steps. He stressed that the Army should be subject to 'proper European democratic control.'
'If in the next two years also we can create a trustworthy system of defence against a Communist invasion we shall at lease have removed the most obvious temptation to those who seek to impose their will by force upon the free democracies.

DURING nearly the whole of Saturday, a severe storm broke over Bolton and district. Rain fell in torrents, and transit along the street was rendered almost impossible. On Sunday the weather was beautifully fine, but on Monday there was another severe thunderstorm. In the afternoon the lightning was excessively vivid, and the thunder claps loud and continuous. The rain again fell in torrents, and visitors to the town were compelled to cease perambulating the streets and take refuge in doors.
AT Norwood last night, a young man calling himself William Thomas Hunt was apprehended and charged with murder. He introduced himself to a number of persons who were drinking at an inn, and under pretence of giving them a sobering draught, administered a strong dose of strychnine to three persons. One of them died almost immediately, and the others are not expected to recover.
