GREENMOUNT are looking to re-sign professional Saeed Anwar for next season.

The Pakistan all rounder has been a revelation to the club helping them to their first ever Hamer Cup win last week when he hit 78 not out and picked up five wickets.

The week before he hit a quickfire century against the Bolton Association to win back the Trinity Cup for the League and there still looks like more runs and wickets to come.

Yet when the player came in April, Greenmount did not know what to expect.

The club's cricket secretary Philip Williams admitted the player was signed on the strength of details submitted by Saeed's agent.

"We did trawl the internet and check that the information we received was correct but what was uncertain was how Saeed would settle in England.

"He has been on tours to South Africa and the West Indies but this is his first time in England and you never know how they will find it.

Gamble

"I suppose it was a gamble but signing overseas professional usually is.

"We just wanted a batting professional, who could bowl a bit. Obviously he's made runs but his bowling has been a revelation. We didn't expect him to be that good but now he's one of the leading wicket-takers in the League."

Saeed has scored a total of 823 runs and taken 70 wickets while he and his Australian team-mate Mike O'Rourke have run up a total of 1862 runs for the club.

"But for a couple of disappointing results we could still be in the championship race," said Mr Williams.

"We had a bad weekend when we lost to Egerton on the Saturday and Westhoughton the day after and that really put us out of it.

"But we've won the Hamer Cup for the first time in the club's history and if Saeed does come back, then you never know what can happen.

"I know he wanted to focus on the cup last week before sitting down to talk about coming back but we want him back and I think he's keen to return."
