Group One

Bolton Rec Colts 0 -- Dabs Direct 2

The Rec Colts and Dabs Direct got the Summer Cup off to a good start in a very spirited game. The Colts, a man down, gave a good account of themselves until early in the second half when a good opportunist gaol from Dabs' Mark Gowans broke their resistance. A second Gowans' goal late in the game sealed the game for Dabs.

Griffin All Stars 2 -- VM Mets 2

Although a winning start for the All Stars, a below par performance against six Vets goals from Simon Robinson and Scott Gemmell. Vets' scorer Glen Yates. manager Lee France described Glen's goal as a "once in a lifetime goal".

Group Two

CCS Jolly Carter 3 -- Crew XI 3

A shock looked on with Crew deservedly ahead at the interval via a good strike from Mike Howarth, Crew keeper Brian Taylor keeping the not so jolly lads at bay. But Crew were out played in the second half, Jolly's netting three without reply. Goals by John Openshaw, Ewan Cain and Graham Partington.

Bolton Recreation B 2 -- Samba 0

Samba have withdrawn from the competition, a win and three points awarded to the Recreation 'B'.

Group Three

No real surprises in this group with Burnden Wanderers and Monteraze both registering comfortable wins. The Wanderers, playing to their full potential, scored three sweet goals, two from Paul Davies and one by Paul Swift, with no reply from opponents Dentech.

Premier champions Monteraze went one better in beating Bolton Rec 'A' 4-1. The Smiley brothers had plenty to smile about with Jason notching a hat-trick and one for Chris. Both look set for an easy ride to the quarter finals.

Group Four

A non-event for group four. A.F.C. Mule have withdrawn from the competition and first division champions Tag Heuer couldn't field a side still celebrating their first championship win I'm told. This means wins are awarded to their opponents Index and Edge Tavern.

SHOCK result of the day in the premier saw relegation candidates Church Hotel F/w produce their best performance of the season to beat premier leaders Barnstoneworth United by three goals to one. I'm told it could have been 10.

The Church heroes were Andy Morgan, two goals, his first of the season, and Mark Rule the other. No scorer given for United.

Alliance Windows, who were strongly fancied to win the premier title, have slipped by the wayside with their best players away on holiday and unable to field a strong side this week.

They could only field six men and were down to five when player manager Gary Clark went off injured, but they battled on to earn a 0-0 draw against Readey's, a very welcome point that keeps them just above the relegation spot.

York got back to winning ways with a solid performance, beating bottom team J.C. Engineering 4-2, goals from Peter Cooper (2), Mike Hather and Simon Lightbown; Paul Lawton notching a brace for J.C.

Monteraze 4 -- Able Auto 0. Plenty of good football played by both sides but Able were always going to struggle with a man short and no regular keeper. It was only a matter of time before Monteraze got among the goals -- that man Jason Smiley at it again with another hat-trick (his 17th goal of the season) with one for James Greaves. SUNDAY SUMMER

FIRST DIVISION THERE were shocks galore in the chase for the first division title with the top three teams all suffering defeats. With just two games remaining to complete the summer programme, it's perm any two from six for the promotion places. Current leaders Pickerings Lifts went down to bottom team Montserrat, Ray Foy the scorer, a win that takes them off the bottom spot.

Early pace setters X Records failed to take any points for the third week on the trot, going down 3-2 against Bolton Recreation who are on a good run undefeated in their last six games. Scorers Vijay Mistry and Ian Lewtas (Record), Mark Worthington (2), Simon Smith (Rec). I have been informed that X Records' striker and the league's leading goal scorer Ashish Jethwa has suffered a serious injury on behalf of all the teams at Burnden. I wish him a speedy recovery.

Boca Seniors put themselves in a strong position in beating the Farmers 3-0, Jim Fitzgerald two, and one for player manager Russ Hewitt. F.C Elite went nap with a good all round team performance against All Nations, goals by Ayub Hariff (3), Sohail Khan, Salman Cangat With their final two games against Boca Seniors and Bolton Recreation, they could well improve on their fourth position.
