Talking rugby league with Frank Endicott, Wigan RL chief coach I HOPE a few BEN readers got the chance to see us in action against Halifax Blue Sox at the JJB Stadium last Sunday, whether in person or live on TV.
It was not one of our best performances of the season and our first half showing was particularly disappointing. We made quite a few first half mistakes both in attack and defence and Halifax definitely deserved to go in at the half-time break 8 - 4 ahead.
However, if we are to be in with a shout for the Super League title this season, then we must be strong and resilient in the face of adversity. Our second half performance was full of guts, determination and application and I was very happy with the 20 - 12 win and the two league points in the end.
We travel to the Willows this week to take on the Salford City Reds, noon kick-off, and they always give you a tough ride on their own patch.
We travelled there earlier in the season and won 32 - 0, but believe me, we had to battle really hard to keep their score-line to nil. There are some potent attacking players in the Salford ranks and a player such as Martin Offiah needs little introduction.
Offiah got the try that eventually settled last week's game between the Reds and London, so they will come into this weekend's game all fired up. Also, they have a good recent record at the Willows, having won five of their last seven home games.
It is always tough when you are at the top of the Super League ladder, because every team wants to knock you off, so we cannot afford to lose focus over the next five rounds.
We have also had some good news on the transfer front this week with PNG captain Adrian Lam agreeing to join us next season. Adrian is a world class star who will be a real crowd favourite.
Unfortunately, this means Willie Peters will leave the club at the end of the season. Everyone at the club cannot speak highly enough of Willie. He is a great professional, who has a great future in the game. He is very keen to test himself in the top competition in the world and I know he wants to represent Australia. We all wish him well.
Finally, thanks to all fans who sent letters in after my first article last week. It was great to read all your comments, especially Mr Gorner from Bolton who said he had been watching Wigan for over 60 years!
