THE first task of the new Labour Government was to address the consequences of the economic mismanagement and the boom and bust politics of previous Tory governments.
Labour's policies have created a strong economy with failing unemployment and low inflation.
The nation's finances are in the black and there has been a significant reduction in paying off the national debt.
Resources can now be directed towards future investment.
Even while securing the nation's financial stability, significant progress has been made.
There has been increased investment in education.
The New Deal opened up new employment opportunities. We have the minimum wage, increased rights for trade unions, a substantial increase in child benefit and the family tax credit.
Despite the adverse publicity, significant extra help has been given to the poorest pensioners.
The July Spending Review sets the agenda for the future of this country.
The proposals clearly demonstrate this Labour Government has the will, the ability and the means to modernise and create the Britain of the 21st Century.
The Spending Review provides for the expansion of health services, education, scientific and technological research, housing and transport.
The ultimate goal is a unified, prosperous and sustainable society, providing real hope for many communities who have for so long felt ignored and rejected.
The battle lines are now clear. We await the Tory response. Early indications are that they wish to cut Labour's proposed spending by at least one third. Any promise of lower taxation will benefit the few, while once again they cynically oversee further erosion of social and community provision.
