HIS" and "hers." That's well-known Bolton steeplejack Fred Dibnah and wife Sheila whose individual choice of transport are years and miles apart.

For while Sheila took delivery of a new W reg Peugeot car from a Bury garage this week, husband Fred rolled up in a vintage steam roller.

Both gleaming vehicles, along with their respective and respected owners, are pictured at Elton Garage in Bolton Road where Sheila picked up her new car.

Husband Fred's mode of transport, however, was some 90 years older.

Fred, who has just been awarded an honorary doctorate of technology by The Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, prefers to drive an older and more sedate "model."

His choice of transport on the day was a 1910 Aveling and Porter steam roller which he has owned for the past 30 years.

While his wife's car can command an enviable top speed, Fred's steam roller, is only capable of trundling along at five mph.

But Sheila had the last laugh after Fred suffered a mishap on the way back from the garage.

"We had arranged to meet up in Radcliffe for lunch," said Fred. "But on Bury and Bolton Road, I stopped to fill the engine with water."

But a problem with a hydrant left him covered in dirt and water, just as wife Sheila rolled up in her new car.

"I asked her for a lift. But she said 'you're not getting into my new car like that!'"
