ATHERTON voluntary groups who work to provide a better life for those less fortunate have the opportunity to help themselves.
There is cash left in the pot available for community and voluntary groups whose actions particularly complement the work of Wigan Social Services department.
The fund has a further £12,000 to distribute.
In the first round of funding 128 groups received grants, totalling £207,568.
The funding comes under the title of Grant Aid and Cllr Brian Strett, Cabinet member for Health and Social Services, said: "The Council values greatly the role of the voluntary sector in enhancing the lives of people living in the Borough.
"It is truly magnificent. We are only too pleased to assist in their efforts by providing funding for various organisations. I hope they now get their applications in as soon as possible."
Grant Aid is available for groups who work with children, people with physical disabilities, mental ill health, learning disabilities or older people.
Work carried out must help:
Improve the quality of life of residents
Enable people to live full and independent lives
Support communities to prosper and care for their fellow citizens
And give supportive and preventative work with children, young people and families.

Application packs are available from the Unit, based at Ashton Town Hall, Bryn Street, Ashton. Closing date for completed applications is September 15.
