WELL represented in the pre-season tournament quarter finals were the various 1st divisions as their respective teams occupied seven places. The only premiership outfit was Andy Arnauld's B.B.2.K. who, without doubt, were hoping to be among the top three prize winners.
Game of the quarter finals was the evenly-matched contest between Fidos and Salford Reds as, locked on 6-6 at the final whistle, a sudden-death penalty shoot-out saw Fidos edge home
Of the semi finals, just edging the 'highlights' was the stylish encounter between B.B.2.K. and Old Trafford. Each team complemented one another in a chess-like low tempo game, final score 5-5. Penalty-wise, the main talking point was the stunning full stretch save (goals 16/4ft) from B.B.2.K.'s Dale McFadden as his team-mate Andy Arnauld had hit the bar.
The crucial spot kicks fell to B.B.'s Wayne Shaw who hit the post, and Trafford's Kieran Owen who held his nerve to cap a memorable game and a place in the final versus our last tournament winners, Simon Riley/Kurt Derbyshire's Viva Goon Troop.
The final had very few openings within the open exchanges although the standard of passing and movement was a credit to both teams. By half time Viva led 4-2 and in control as Trafford did not have any subs to fall back on and, having played two 40-minute games, were a little heavy-legged. The second half was a joy for Viva's skilful players as Sam and Gani Heenan along with Kurt Derbyshire relished the space Viva to claim 1st prize with an 11-6 victory.
Not credited as often as they should be, without doubt the 'main' man in 5-a-side football is the goalkeeper. In goals, measured at 16/4ft, fierce shots fired in often from close range, it's fair to say, those that do it deserve as much plaudits as the strikers or stylish playmakers.
Here's a short list of Manor 5s' goalkeepers capable of keeping that very rare clean sheet in 50 minutes 5-a-side football: Dale McFadden (one clean sheet already); Noel Harris (one clean sheet already); Craig Tebay (one clean sheet already); Lee Hall; Gary Wells; Steve Duggan; Paul White; Andy Smith; Alan Davies; Steve Dalton
Dave Steal.
