WORKERS at Bolton's Homebase store have received news that the chain may be sold by supermarket group Sainsbury's. While a buyer has not yet been found, the group is closely studying options for Homebase which may see an "alliance, disposal or joint venture". The Homebase chain is worth around £1 billion and the sale would help Sainsbury's, which has seen share prices fall amid fierce competition from rivals such as Tesco and Wal Mart's Asda.
World leaders Home Depot are among the parties said to be interested in buying the DIY chain.
Sainsbury's new chief executive Peter Davis has been looking at ways of reviving the group's fortunes after it slipped from the top slot in the supermarket league.
Selling Homebase could provide a short-term boost to Sainsbury's but Mr Davis has earmarked a turnaround period lasting three years.
Bolton's Homebase is on Manchester Road.
