CONCERNED residents fear an accident is just waiting to happen as a result of new road markings.

The 'Give Way' markings near the junction of the A674 and the B6228 Blackburn Road, near Whittle Springs, are bamboozling drivers who are not sure who has right of way!

Councillor Eric Bell, Tory leader on Chorley Borough Council and representative for Whittle-le-Woods, said: "We are not happy. It's been a bad accident spot over the years. We feel the markings are confusing and a lot of people are not sure who has right of way.

"The road markings were put in when the road when the new Moat House development was built.

"We reported the confusion to the county council, but they generally wait until things have settled down and people have got more used to the junction. We are just worried that there might be accidents before then."

He added: "We feel that 'Give Way' signs are not clear enough. It needs something more to say who has got right of way.

"We have asked the county council to look into it and we have asked people to write in to the county council to let them know the problems."

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: "This junction previously had a very bad accident record.

"The new development meant that there were changes in the road which needed to be highlighted to drivers to improves safety. Extra 'Give Way' signs were added to increase driver awareness.

"The scheme was completed three months ago and we believe it is operating safely.

"We are, of course, happy to speak with anyone who has any comments to make on the new layout." ROAD peril: Coun Bell and concerned people at the controversial junction
