LEIGH Centurions are angling for a prize Salmon! They are hot on the trail of Barrow's flying winger Paul Salmon.
They've put out the bait, contract talks are underway, and they now hope to reel him in.
Leigh see the teenage speedster as one possible solution to a lack of genuine pace on the flanks. If they fail in their bid, the Centurions will turn elsewhere.
The locally-based centre or winger will be best remembered for the 90 metre solo try he scored for the Border Raiders at Hilton Park back in January. That stuck in Leigh's minds and when he became available they made their move.
The talks are being handled by Leigh's Football Director Steve Blakeley. He says: "Paul is just the type of player we are after. He's got all the right qualities. If we could get him it would add considerably to our scoring potential.
"He spent three years in the junior sides at Leigh East before signing professionally for Warrington. He's been at Barrow for the last couple of years but wants a move back down here.
"I tried to get him on loan towards the end of last season but Barrow wouldn't play ball," he adds.
Leigh are also planning to open discussions with experienced winger David Jones, last season's captain at Lancashire Lynx.
Leigh are also confident that they'll soon complete a deal with Wigan for Liam Bretherton who made a massive impression while on loan at Leigh in the latter stages of the season.
"Liam wants to come to Leigh," says Blakeley. "Wigan want a small fee for him, but I don't think that will be a problem. I'd be very disappointed if we couldn't conclude the deal soon."
Leigh still fancy Wigan's reserve team goal-kicking stand-off Phil Jones but the Warriors are quoting a £10,000 transfer fee which might put the deal out of their reach.
