IMMEDIATELY after the Tony Martin trial, a senior police officer advised people who found someone breaking into their home not to tackle the intruder but to shout for assistance.
A fat lot of use that advice was to Christine Burke, who was trapped inside her house for forty minutes, while a man smashed her windows and tried to kick her door in.
After an hour, the police responded to her call for help, but when the response did come it wasn't a police car, but rather a return phone call to provide her with a crime number!
