MIKE Whitlow scored a rare goal to give Wanderers and their jubilant fans a revenge victory at Prenton Park on Monday afternoon.
The captain struck in the 53rd minute with a delightful finish after clever work by Gareth Farrelly.
It was an oasis of skill in a match littered with stoppages and low in entertainment value.
The needle which linked this fixture in recent years and which came to a head during last season's Worthington Cup Semi-Final was evident from the start.
The Bolton team coach only arrived at the ground at 2.25pm, a deliberate ploy, after their late arrival led to a successful away win at West Brom in their last game on the road.
The players were already in warm-up gear as assistant manager Phil Brown had arrived earlier to hand in the official team sheet.
The game, which saw Mark Fish outstanding in a magnificent Wanderers rearguard action, ended in controversy with Rovers defender Gareth Roberts sent off in the 89th minute for a foul on Bo Hansen.
