Bateson, vice-chairman of the Markets Committee, when references to the bad condition of the Foundry-st. abattoirs and to future planning were made at the Markets Committee annual inspection yesterday. THE projected Tunnel under the English Channel was discussed at a meeting of the British Association this week, and declared to be quite practicable. The President, Sir J. Hawkshaw, said it had been ascertained that there was a uniform thickness of chalk at the depth at which it would be proposed to make the tunnel, and that it would not be necessary to make any circuitous route. The proposed tunnel would be nearly 150 feet below the bottom of the Channel, and even if there should be some slight leakage, engineers must know how to deal with it. The tunnel would be ventilated by two pneumatic tubes worked from the centre, sucking in air from each end. Should the project be carried out, there is no doubt it would immensely increase the trade between England and France, besides adding to the comfort of tourists.
