A GROUP of top local musicians have formed a consortium in a bid to take over the former Oscars Cafe Bar which closed mysteriously five months ago.
The aim is to convert the building at the Wellsprings, Bolton, into an "arts" cafe.
The consortium's spokesman, Bob Sellen, said: "Whilst we will run it as a commercial business, we will be looking to put on the kind of quality entertainment that is so sadly lacking in the town centre.
"We would also hope the facility would be used by local artists to exhibit their work. In many respects it will be something of a civic amenity."
Also backing the project is BEN web site contributor and local singer-songwriter and Buskers Ball supremo Alec Martin who has been campaigning for such a venue for some years.
"It is sad that Bolton hasn't really had such a venue in the past, but now we can make amends," said Alec.
"We hope the public will back our bid to provide a jewel in the town's evening economy, where people can enjoy non-mainstream music in a relaxed atmosphere.
"What we certainly don't want to see is yet another theme pub or karaoke bar."
Anyone wishing to offer support for the project is invited to write to Bob Sellen, c/o 11 Kensington Court, Bolton, BL1 4AW.
