It's obvious where this picture was taken, of course, because the Parish Church looms large. The building on the right was the Parish Church schoolrooms, which at the time, in 1972, were being demolished (the church, you will notice, was looking particularly clean, because it had just been sandblasted).
The schools had been built in 1819, at a cost of £1,800, and although the premises had at one time, for about 10 years, housed a day school, it was mainly used for Sunday Schools. In their heyday they housed 1,400 pupils and 110 teachers, and were also thrown open on Saturday evenings to teach the three Rs to poor boys and sewing and knitting to girls. Most of you will realise, of course, that the site is now occupied by the Evening News' building.
