POLICE and council staff are launching a high profile operation to protect play areas in Bury.
Vandals have struck repeatedly in the past few weeks, causing damage amounting to thousands of pounds.
In a bid to combat the problem, police and council security services patrols will be targeting the worst hit areas.
CCTV cameras are also being introduced to catch vandals in the act.
Cllr John Byrne, deputy leader of Bury Council, said: "Our security services will have direct radio contact with the police and we intend to take advantage of CCTV cameras at vulnerable sites.
"It is pointless providing these areas if they are so badly damaged they become too dangerous for children to use.
"We are determined to stamp out this anti-social behaviour and ensure our children continue to play in safety."
Witnesses to vandalism can call 0161 253 6606.
