Horwich RMI Harrier's annual triathlon took place last Sunday and again attracted a high class field.

There were 70 competitors for the long course and twelve undertaking the short course more suitable for novice triathletes.

The event has moved from its beginnings as essentially an internal club event to one of the major triathlon events in the North West but it was still a Horwich club member who dominated the event.

Adrian Selby was in second place after the 750 metre swim but narrowly won the 42km cycle ride by a margin of 21 seconds and then powered his way to a convincing win in the 12km fell race to win overall by over six minutes, improving his 1999 time by 3:39 on a course which included a 50% longer swim.

The most improved prize was also won by a Horwich member, Ed Swift, who improved last year's performance by nearly six minutes.

In the short course event Janet Thompson finished 10th in an overall time of 1:23:54.

Results: 1. Adrian Selby (10:36 + 68:55 + 45:50) 2:05:21; 10 Kev Gaskell (16:30 + 78:36 + 48:02) 2:23:08; 25 John Foulds (14:48 + 86:40 + 56:58) 2:38:26; 34 Peter Ramsdale (19:08 + 91:48 + 56:30) 2:47:26; 46 Liz Smart (L40) (15:33 + 97:33 + 60:32) 2:53:38; 55 Ed Swift (V50) (19:18 + 93:17 + 61:42) 3:04:17.

IN the Kendal Half Marathon, Sue Catterall was the first woman home (as well as first LV40) and 14th overall in a time of 1:27:12, four minutes ahead of Spenborough's Kath Drake.

The very hilly demanding course over winding roads and farmtracks was won by Telford AC's Paul Muller in a time of 1:11, a time which reflected the severity of the course.

This was Sue's second recent run over demanding road courses as she recently finished second to Angela Brand Barker in the Swinside Six, run over the foothills of Skiddaw to the west of Keswick.

THREE Horwich Harriers raced in the Liverpool International Half Marathon where the top three men and women comprised three Russians, two Kenyans and a Spaniard.

All three performed well in a big field of 1589 runners.

Results: 1. Fabian Roncero(Spain) 1:01:12; 183 Keith Makin (7th V50) 1:33:24; 187 Jonathan Farnworth 1:33:31; Ladies : 1 Ester Kiplaget (Kenya) 1:13:39; 25 Gaynor Higson 1:39:07.

ON Tuesday, September 12th, the club will be holding its Uphill Mile Race with a 7.15 pm start. Registration is at the Bridge Inn.
