A MOMENT of aberration from Sean Taylor saw Atherton Town go down 1-0 at home to Wythenshawe Amateurs in the Manchester League Premier Division.

The defender got caught out trying to take the ball round an opponent near his own penalty area and the Wythenshawe player made him pay by scoring the only goal of the game.

Town manager Shaun Lynch was denied the services of no less than 14 first team players through a combination of injury, work and cricket duties.

On the plus side 17-year-old Danny Nightingale came into the side at left back and looked a tremendous prospect.

Twice in the second half Town striker Phil Hornby looked set for clear runs on goal only to be brought down and on both occasion the referee adjudged the foul to be just outside the penalty area.

Elton Fold worked extremely hard for a 3-2 home win over Stockport Georgians. A 20th minute free kick from Simon Hannan invited Steve Dearden to power in a header before Stockport levelled then took the lead. Keith Ingham equalised before Phil Turner headed the winner.

Breightmet United clocked up an impressive 3-1 home win over Whalley Range in Division One to remain unbeaten after four Goldline Trophy games and five league outings.

That proud record looked in jeopardy at the interval as the first half performance had been well below par and the visitors had taken the lead on 40 minutes after a bad mistake in the Breightmet defence.

The second half showing was much improved with Paul Gallagher levelling on the hour mark after good work by Paul Smith and chipping in a second ten minutes later. A Damien Harper volley into the top corner on 80 minutes rounded it all off for United with midfielder Paul Fletcher again voted man of the match. James Freeborn scored all three goals for the reserves in an excellent 3-3 draw at Stockport Georgians.
