THURSDAY SUMMER
CUP COMPETITION
QUARTER final results
Crew XI 0, Burnden Wanderers 2 -- Six men Crew were pinned down for long periods with the Wanderers hitting the post three times in the first five minutes. Paul Davies broke the deadlock in the eighth minute with a well taken goal. Crew were unable to get forward but held out until the 11th minute when Paul Swift nipped in to ensure a semi-final place for the Wanderers.
Index 4, VM Mets 1: The Mets could only field six men but put in a good team performance with a man short. In fact they took a shock lead with a Dave Peers' special. A good 20 yards drive into the bottom right corner giving Index keeper Clive Haslam no chance. The Mets held their lead until the 11th minute when Index levelled the scores through Martin Gregory. This settled Index and the second half brought three more goals for Index, a brace from Gregory to complete his hat-trick and one for Steve Boardman.
Edge Tavern 1, CCS Jolly Carter 0: A repeat of last year's final but with a shock result for nobody other than the lads from the Tavern gave them a chance of winning this game. But this was certainly no fluke. They turned the form book upside down with a good all round team performance. Mark Aspen was their hero netting that all important goal three minutes from the final whistle.
Monteraze 0, Griffin All Stars 0 (Monteraze win 3-2 on penalties after extra time golden goal): This was always going to be a very tight game with no quarter given or indeed asked for. Chances were few and far between. What chances got through to the keepers were comfortably dealt with. With the score still 0-0 at the end of normal time, we entered a period of extra time, golden goal style. This still failed to produce a result so the game went into a penalty shoot-out. The Monteraze lads kept their cool to go through by 3-2 and a chance to complete the double.
Semi-final draw: 6.30pm Monteraze v Edge Tavern; 7pm Burnden Wanderers v Index.
