FLETCHER'S impressive run of 27 straight victories came to an abrupt end this week.
It was in February that this team lost a game (by one goal) as they have worked their way up the leagues, winning titles along the way.
Obviously full of confidence after such an impressive run and also qualifying for the finals day of the Summer 2000 competition later this month, they would not have expected the resolute display put on by the Black Horse.
As you can imagine, Fletchers would not relinquish their winning streak easily and the commitment shown by both sides was second to none. In the second half Black Horse went a goal in front only to be pegged back and there was never more than a goal in it. However at the final whistle it was Black Horse who had their nose in front to win 9-8 in an enthralling game.
Tynes Bank and Salford FC started this week level at the top of the Monday First Division. After Haywood Owls thrashed Charisma 24-8, both teams knew that defeat would see them fall behind in the title race as we approach the midway point of the season. In an end to end game, both teams showed 100pc commitment with both keepers pulling off some fine saves to keep their team in it.
In the second half a series of defensive errors by Salford allowed Tynes Bank to pull away and win the game 12-10. This will no doubt be a fixture to watch in seven weeks time.
In the Worthingtons Tuesday Fourth Division, Ardwicks closed the gap on Pennine FC with an impressive 13-12 win. Pennine went down fighting though and nearly came back from being 12-8 down to snatch a draw. The whole division is now very tight with teams taking points off each other in what seem to be close games. With Hertha Kitt drawing with Brandlesholme 9-9 there are now only four points separating five teams.
CXY Vultures went into their game in the Guinness Thursday Fifth Division three points behind their opponents, Sally Up Steps, who were at the top. This meant that a win would put them level, but defeat would leave them trailing six points. Both teams missed opportunities at either end in a closely fought contest. By the final whistle it was hard to say which team deserved the points more, so the 10-10 draw that was the result, seemed fair. Unless Sally Up Steps slip up elsewhere, CXY now know they must win this fixture next time round.
