A CHORLEY brownie leader has carried out a driving ambition.

Jacqueline Berry, who lives off Pall Mall, undertook a one-day fund-raising challenge -- which she read about in a guiding magazine -- at the Shell Global Solutions test track in Warrington, raising money for Marie Curie Cancer Care and Breast Cancer Care.

And it was a dream come true for the 33-year-old 1st Wheelton Brownies assistant leader.

Jacqueline said: "It was brilliant. It was basically a ladies' driving challenge to allow females the chance to drive vehicles which they wouldn't normally.

"I have always wanted to have a go at driving at big vehicles. I will have a bash at anything." She feared she was too small to drive the double decker bus. "It was a problem reaching the pedals," she said.

But after a quick seat adjustment Jacqueline was able to fulfil her dream.

"I drove the bus, and a fire engine, and a military troop carrier amongst others. There should have been a tank and a dust cart there but they were not running. I was a bit disappointed. If I do this again I will definitely head straight for those," she said.

A crash course was part of the fun before driving each vehicle. Jacqueline said: "There was an instructor with you who showed you the gears and made sure you knew where the brakes were!"

After a lap to get used to driving each of the vehicles, the drivers had to manoeuvre it round a course, sometimes including a slalom, without hitting any of the cones.

"I got full marks for that -- I was really chuffed," said Jacqueline. "I thoroughly enjoyed it."

Jacqueline entered the challenge after reading about in a guiding magazine. She joined scores of other women from across the country to fund-raise and enjoy the day.

She said: "I raised about £155," adding: "I would definitely have another go."
