A MULTI-million pound centre opened in Farnworth this week to offer a new seat of learning within the Borough.

The purpose-built centre on the corner of Cross Street and Queen Street aims to prove age is no barrier when it comes to learning something new.

Students at the centre, built for Age Concern, will all be retired or elderly people.

Discussions have taken place with older people on the range of learning opportunities they would like to see at the centre and the courses most in demand include computer and information technology, from absolute beginner through to advanced level, and languages such as French, German and Spanish.

The Learning Centre will focus largely on non-formal but good quality courses.

The opening coincides with Age Concern Week when visitors can look around and register for courses.

In addition to classrooms, there is a hall for dancing, keep-fit and discussion, a dedicated IT suite with 12 computers, offices, an aromatherapy room and a quiet room.

Response was so enthusiastic for the centre, that when it opened its doors for the first time on Monday, there was a queue of people waiting outside.

Gareth Evans, Bolton Age Concern chief officer, said: "We have been delighted with the response.

"People were queuing up to come in despite there being a bus strike. Most were waiting to sign up for computer classes or languages. But there has been a lot of interest in other activities.

"It shows very much that older people do want to learn. Also pleasing is that many of those who have come in are new to adult learning."

Students may well be plentiful, but the centre is still appealing for voluntary tutors.
