VISITORS from around the world got their teeth into what could soon become a new global sport . . .

People from South Africa, Australia, America and throughout Europe visited the Corner Pin pub in Bolton Road North, Stubbins -- to throw black puddings!

The world championship black pudding throwing competition was revived yesterday after a gap in competitions of four years.

But its popularity had never waned during that time, and crowds gathered around the rural pub to prove the attraction was as great as ever.

One competitor, and an early leader for the title, Tony Wier, 28, had travelled over from South Africa with a group of family and friends specifically for the tournament.

He explained: "We have come specifically for this. It has been quite a while since we were last able to come to the contest.

"We always used to compete each year, and when we saw it advertised on the world sports channel we decided we had to come and chance our arm.

"This is quite an event, and made better that it is all for charity.

"So far I have managed to knock down four Yorkshire puddings, and the world record is 14. I am hoping I will warm up as the day continues."

Participants were given three attempts at knocking 21 Yorkshire puddings off a wall with their black puddings.

And the culinary War of the Roses heated up with the arrival of Yorkshire competitors who made their way into the arena mid-afternoon.

Amid the chorus of "oohs" and "aahs" of the watching gallery, landlord, Darren Tingle, 34, who originates from Surrey, smiled: "This is what I came to this pub for.

In this part of England it is important to keep our traditions alive. I can not believe we have had people here from all over the world, and they have come just to take part in this contest. It is all tremendous fun."
