Telford United 2, Leigh RMI 1 LEIGH RMI were left to pounder what might have been last night as Telford United nicked all three Nationwide Conference points in a 2-1 win.
A sparse crowd of just 281 at Worcester City - Telford's temporary home - saw Leigh fall two behind and then almost snatch a draw with a spirited second half comeback.
RMI, with an unchanged team for a sixth successive match, found ex-Wrexham striker and Telford's record signing, Jake Edwards, a real handful.
Iain Swan did well to block one shot and another early Edwards effort skimmed wide of Craig Dootson's right-hand post.
But it was RMI who went closest to opening the scoring when Ricky Harris flicked on Andy Farrell's long throw. The ball fell to Peter Cumiskey who saw his fierce drive superbly blocked by United skipper Neil Moore. Cumiskey dragged the rebound wide.
Leigh were made to pay for their amazing miss with Telford scoring twice in six minutes through Steve Palmer and Edwards.
Telford started the second half just as they'd finished the first with Gary Martindale and Edwards causing all sorts of problems, Martindale lashing one shot against Dootson's crossbar.
With ex-Sheffield United veteran Brian Gayle an imposing figure in United's defence, RMI created few openings.
Steve Jones could have reduced the deficit on the hour but his snap shot was well blocked by Williams.
The chance seemed to galvanise Leigh who, almost from nowhere, grabbed a foothold on the game. Jones sped away down the right and crossed into the six-yard area where sub Andy Mason, scored with virtually his first touch for a second game in succession.
RMI put Telford under increasing pressure. Ged Kielty saw one shot well saved by Williams and Tony Black headed against an upright.
