I CAN'T wait to read the letters from the many vociferous critics of the council's decision to enforce the 50mph limit on St Peter's Way, Bolton.

Had these people had their selfish way, the unacceptable carnage would have continued. But now, due to the good sense of the council and tough policing, accidents on this notorious black-spot have been reduced by a staggering 60pc.

Of course, to most people, this was predictable. In July 1998, I wrote to the BEN congratulating the council on their "long overdue" proposal to implement this speed limit.

In the same letter, I backed the council's decision to reduce speed limits in built-up areas to 20mph saying, where this had already been introduced in other towns, pedestrian casualties had been cut by 61pc and child pedestrian and cyclist casualties by 67pc.

Most of us will appreciate the work that has been involved in implementing these speed limits, knowing, that any one of us could well have been one of the 60pc of the accidents that have been prevented.

Well done Bolton Council and the police!
