SAM Allardyce was running the rule over more trialists today as he continued his tireless pursuit of fresh talent to strengthen his winning hand.

The Wanderers' boss, who continues to scour the home and continental markets for reinforcements, set up a behind-closed-doors match to check out the latest arrivals hoping to win Reebok contracts.

He was also using the game to give Kevin Nolan and Simon Charlton - both back in action after injury lay-offs - vital match practice.

Nolan, who broke his wrist in the United States, has had two brief substitute appearances - playing a part in the crucial second goal against Portsmouth on Saturday with his first touch of the ball - while Charlton returned to the subs' bench after a six-match lay-off with a hamstring injury.

Meanwhile, Sam Allardyce says it could get to the end of the week before he is able to complete the signing of Nigerian international Mutiu Adepoju.

The deal has been struck that will bring the 29-year-old midfielder from Real Sociedad to the Reebok but there are several hurdles still to be cleared - medical formalities, work permit procedures and clearance from the Spanish FA - before it can be rubber stamped.

Allardyce, who says he is hoping to land a new loan signing, denied today that the player in question is Manchester City's 37-year-old centre-back Richard Jobson.

"I haven't spoken to Joe Royle," he said. "It's pure speculation."
