Lostock started their league campaign in disastrous fashion with this defeat away at Littleborough. Although the 46-0 score line suggests they took a hammering, this was not a fair reflection of the game.
Once again much to the clubs disappointment, Lostock took a scratch side consisting mostly of the backs being wing forwards. This was down to a combination of things including injuries, the fuel crisis, work commitments and most sadly a lack of commitment from certain players.
This backline was never going to be good enough against players who regularly play in those positions and this showed in the last ten minutes of each half when all the points were scored.
After weathering pressure for most of the first half Lostock conceded four quick tries to put the game beyond them.
Until then the home side had come across a wall of resolute defenders and were becoming frustrated at not being able to breach this line.
All the tries came from the same move of getting the ball out wide quickly, making an overlap to score each one in the same corner. After a battling half, the visitors didn't deserve to finish the first period so far behind.
Lostock showed their mettle in the second half and were probably the better side.
Having to work harder going up the hill, the Lostock forwards took the game to Littleborough and created some good opportunities for themselves which unfortunately they couldn't convert into points.
Mid-way through the second period, they lost stand-off Hunter with a groin injury and had to move yet another forward into the back line.
In the last ten minutes tiredness showed and Lostock conceded another three quick tries somewhat against the run of play.
The commitment and attitude from the players who were there, many playing out of position, were a credit to the club.
Sadly the difference between the two sides was the players who weren't there.
Lostock are desperately short of backs and urgently need an influx of either new or old players. Practice nights are Tuesday and Thursday's 7pm - 9pm.
