Chorley FC 3 Trafford Borough FC 2 A THUNDEROUS afternoon's entertainment at Victory Park saw Chorley book their place in the next round of the FA Cup thanks to Peter Smythe's late, late winner.

Moneychester Utd might have deemed the competition to be less worthy of their consideration than some two-bit Brazilian adventure last season, but the enduring appeal of the most famous cup in the world was clearly shown in this riveting encounter.

After a slow start, Chorley took a cracking 26th minute lead when Smythe's corner was flicked home at the near post by Mills.

Earlier Chorley's debutant keeper Paul Eatock had pulled off a fine save to keep the scoreline blank and ensure his side went in at half-time with the lead.

Twenty minutes into the second half period, though, Eatock was beat as Chorley's defence was caught ball-watching as Pannett climbed to head beyond the keeper.

Brother David though quickly restored Chorley's advantage with a wonderful goal, giving Merrick no chance with a stupendous overhead kick from Hook's header.

However with six minutes left, Trafford levelled again when Emmett's deflected free kick left Eatock clutching despairingly at thin air.

Deep into injury time Chorley grabbed the all-important winner when substitute Court, Mills and Eatock combined superbly to release Smythe who coolly curled his shot beyond the flailing arms of Merrick for a memorable winner.

Chorley now entertain Whitby in the next round while this Saturday, Chorley travel to Belper.

The coach leaves at 12 noon and costs £10.

Next Tuesday Chorley are at home to Kendal.
