SAM Allardyce strengthened his defensive hand today when he signed Nantes centre-back John Gope-Fenepej on a three month loan.
The Wanderers' boss first spotted the 22-year-old playing for the French club at Arsenal in last season's UEFA Cup, when he'd gone to Highbury to check on another player.
"He looks a very good defender, a very willing lad and is looking forward to playing in England," the manager said after being impressed by Gope-Fenepej during a week's trial.
"He'll give us good cover for Mark Fish and Gudni Bergsson."
Wanderers have just one hurdle to clear before completing the deal that will bring Nigerian captain Mutui Adepoju to the Reebok from Real Sociedad for the rest of the season. The midfielder has returned to Spain while his work permit is being processed.
Meanwhile, Allardyce is giving a trial to 21-year-old Dutch striker Elbekay Bouchiba from AZ Alkmaar.
