CHORLEY Tennis Club's A team entertained Broughton B for their last match of the summer.
Some good attacking play by Geoff Barrie and Martin Tattersall enabled them to win two sets, each 6-3, and Stephanie Drinkall and Jenny Burridge won a set 6-4, but Chorley trailed 5-3 at the start of the mixed sets.
Wins by Anne Warhurst and Geoff Barrie (6-4), Ian McClelland and Stephanie Drinkall (6-2) and Jenny Burridge and Gary Barker (6-1) meant that Chorley had gained a 6-5 lead before the last set started.
In a fluctuating final set Martin Tattersall and talented junior Heather McClelland narrowly failed to complete the victory, losing 7-5 to give a final score of 6-6.
Chorley C's resounding win at home to Garstang B in their last match resulted in them gaining top spot in their division and promotion.
Wins by Carol Wright and Paula Thornton 6-2, 7-6, Dea Pakrin and Carolyn Grice 6-2, 6-3 and Mike Brazier partnering Andy Heywood 6-1, 6-1, gave Chorley a good lead.
Success in the mixed doubles by Carol Wright and Andy Heywood 7-6, Paula Thornton and Mike Brazier 6-1 and Dea Parkin and Glynn Barker 6-2 gave Chorley an impressive victory 11 sets to 1.
Chorley D won their last match by the same margin. Their 10-2 victory over Chipping featured wins by Michael Bennett and Paul Gaunt 7-5, 6-0, Adrian Thornton and Glynn Baker 6-0, 6-4, Margaret Tootell and Andrea Nixon 6-1, 6-01 and Hayley Wright and Dea Parkin 6-2 giving a 7-1 lead. Three wins in the mixed meant that the Windsor Park side had a comprehensive victory to end the summer highly placed in their division.
The tennis club's new clubhouse has now been completed and in use and work on the new courts should be completed in time for the club's senior tournament finals which take place on September 24. The following Sunday, October 1, Chorley Tennis Club is hosting the Lancashire County Junior Aces Finals with competitors converging on the club from various parts of the county.
This is an indication of the fact that the club now possesses some of the finest facilities in the region.
