A FREE examination and weigh-in of a particular kind of pet proved a popular draw at a Bury pet store at the weekend.
It's a new one on us, but the Northern region of the British Chellonia Group organised the event -- for tortoises and turtles. (Chellonia is from the Greek for shell.)
Regional chairman John Thorpe, from Bury, explained that the "weigh in" -- at Wilkinsons store on The Rock -- attracted 23 tortoises and two turtles and their owners.
"It wasn't just a weigh-in", he said, "it was also a health check, a bit like an MoT for a car. But it also offers an opportunity to pick up information and ask advice."
These little shelled friends are not always kept in the the correct way and can be victims of several misconceptions about their health and well being.
For example, while hibernation is not essential for them, it is still a common feature of tortoise life in captivity. "But," warns John, "it can be a dangerous period for them. Many are not fit enough to go into their winter sleep and either die or wake up weak and ill. Together we can help prevent this."
