WHEN it comes to record-breaking then surely Doris Williams is in a league of her own.

The Dunscar Lady Captain capped her year in office by landing the Ladies Club Championship for an unbelievable 32nd time.

"It was particulatly pleasing to win it this year when I am Lady Captain. It is something that I had in the back of my mind for a while," she confessed.

Her name is littered over the rolls of honour at the club since 1959 when she first won it under her maiden name of Miss D Jones. Since then Doris has dominated with few rivals getting a look in.

Since her first win there have been only 10 years when she has not captured the title. In 1960 it went to Mrs H Warburton, 1974-75 Nelly Cuff, 1983 Miss B Holt,1991-93, 95 and 97 Cath Shuttleworth and 1998 Claire Markham.

"Nelly Cuff was my main rival over that period but I can't remember how many times I beat her in the final," said the veteran golfer who has also picked up the Bolton title three times.

Widow Doris, who was married to former Dunscar Captain and President Ted Williams, believes the secret of her success over such a long period is that she enjoys playing the game.

"Some people take it far too seriously," she said.

Probably in her seventies, although she keeps her age a closely guarded secret, Doris beat Vivienne Lofthouse 2&1 in the semis while Wyn Bickerton beat Mavis Haslam 2 up. Her defeat of Bickerton 4&3 in the final ensured her a 32nd title spanning six decades.
