A BOLTON teenager who has become a big hit helping to run Bolton Market Radio has landed a dream job with Oasis.

Not THE Oasis -- but for Carl Hartley of Blackburn Road, Astley Bridge it's just as good.

Five days a week, starting in three weeks, he'll be presenting the three hour afternoon programme on Tenerife's top radio station, Oasis 101.

And it has all happened so quickly for the Bolton North Sixth Form College student that he has hardly had time to catch breath.

He was on holiday last month in the Canary Islands when he popped into the Oasis 101 station in Los Christianos to tell them how he has had his own weekly show on Bolton Market Radio for 18 months.

He also helps to train students on the pioneering scheme -- which nurtures self-confidence in people disadvantaged through disability, race, learning difficulties and many other factors.

"They asked me to send a demo tape," said Carl. "And I couldn't believe it when they phoned and told me I'd got the job. I used to be so shy before I joined Bolton Market Radio. I used to practise by talking to the wall, like Shirley Valentine."

Carl's parents Dave and Pam, who both have market stalls in Bolton, persuaded him to help out on BMR 18 months ago. They also bought him studio gear to practise in his bedroom.

Project manager Dorothy Martland said: "We'll miss him and shoppers will miss his jokes and competitions. We're so proud to have one our presenters make it big. But he's not the first of our young presenters to be snapped up by other stations so we we must be training them the right way."

Oasis 101 is broadcast in English to Tenerife and three neighbouring islands.

Carl said: "I can't wait to get going. But I owe so much to former senior trainer Derek Knowles and co-presenter Andy Haslam at BMR for all their help. Together they have over 40 years experience in radio broadcasting."
