I AM glad Bolton Metro Council has had the good sense to turn down the request for the demolition of toilets at Barrow Bridge.
These are public amenities. I am on water tablets and my former wife was incontinent and in a wheelchair; our quality of life was dependent on public toilets.
Bolton Metro Council systematically closed toilets all over the town, including Farnworth. The excuses were 'gay haunts' etc. Dr Brian Iddon MP was Housing Chair of Bolton Metro for 10 years, during which time these closures took place. Now he is running a campaign to get them restored.
They should never have been closed, but updated.
If the Council wants support, it will not indulge in any more toilet closures. Indeed it will reinstate those now closed.
Every toilet closed is an attack on the elderly and disabled, as well as on the tourist industry. Indeed it is time we had a notice in the Town Hall Square showing the toilet facilities at our Town Hall. It is our Town Hall not the councillors'.
Store owners and pubs have made it clear they are not going to subsidise the failure of Bolton Metro Council to provide adequate public toilet facilities. After all, I would have thought adequate public toilets were a matter of public hygiene.
If homosexuals are allegedly breaking the law, that is a matter for the police, not the local authority.
