A FESTIVE fund-raising scheme by Bolton Hospice will not only let local people make a Christmas dedication but also light up a town centre landmark.
"Light Up A Life" is the name of a campaign to decorate three giant fir trees in the grounds of Bolton Parish Church with hundreds of lights.
And, for a minimum £5 donation, each light can be dedicated to a special person.
All the lights will be put on the trees together for a special ceremony and service of dedication in the Parish Church on the evening of December 6, conducted by the Vicar of Bolton, the Rev Michael Williams.
"The scheme is a special way to remember loved ones at Christmas, and make a practical gift to the Hospice," explained Sarah Garland for the Hospice. "And it will be a lovely way to celebrate the season."
The money raised will be especially valuable this year as the new Day Hospice is taking shape at the Hospice premises off Chorley New Road, likely to open in January.
It needs an extra £300,000 a year to add to the £1.4 million annually the Hospice already needs to continue its caring work.
The latest campaign has also got support from Bolton Metro, which will allow organisers to keep the lights on daily between 4pm and 11pm until early January. There will also be a special Book of Dedication kept at Bolton Hospice for people to record their individual messages.
"It's an opportunity to remember loved ones we have lost as well as those living away from Bolton," added Sarah. "Or simply to dedicate a light to a family member, friend or partner."
Commented Rev Michael Williams:"I think this is an excellent scheme because the work which is being done by the Hospice is so important to the town.
"This is a good way of raising money and of raising awareness of the work of the Hospice. We are looking forward to the campaign."
Forms will be available from the Hospice and from the Hospice shops around the area, or you can fill in the form here and send it off with a donation.
It is hoped to make the scheme an annual one, to provide beacons of light which are visible from a distance around. And to create a beautiful and different way of saying "Happy Christmas."
