ANOTHER of Bolton's landmarks has disappeared in a cloud of dust. The 120-foot high chimney of the old Stanley Mill at Jackson Street - better known as Cannon's Mill - was demolished yesterday.

PLANS to spend £48,000 on smoke control in Bolton next year are to go ahead.

MONTY is in Bolton again. When his plane landed at Burtonwood Aerodrome near Warrington this way, he jocularly told an Evening News' reported that he was 'extremely angry' with Bolton Wanderers. They had beaten Portsmouth, the club of which he is president, 4-0 last week. But he added that he was pleased to hear of the revival of the Wanderers' fortunes. Monty is said to have been very amused that his hint to a boy last year that his hair was too long had been taken to heart, and that the boys of the Lads' Club had been busy visiting the barbers' shops for his visit.

THE eightieth cattle fair for horned cattle, horses, pigs, &c. held under the auspices of a local committee, took place in the Westhoughton Cricket Club field, near the Red Lion Inn. There were 44 entries, being a less number than last year, but the quality of the animals shown was equally up to former years, although the scarcity of entries was the cause of comparatively little competition in some of the classes. There was a good number of visitors, but these also showed a diminution compared with last year, which is accounted for by the fair being held on a Tuesday instead of Monday. The trial hunters did not excite much interest, as there was nothing that could be termed a real competition between the two animals which were entered. Mr Councillor A. Challinor again carried off the silver cup, the animal belonging to Dr Brayton, of Hindley, refusing to take the hurdles.
