THE CLARION'S half day ride had a well-known local flavour to it, as they set off up Chorley New Road and through Horwich.

Continuing through past the reservoir, a left was made at Grimeford and down the quiet lane of the same name.

Crossing the A6 at the far end, a steep climb took them to the Little Scotland part of Blackrod where the ride became decidedly easier.

Freewheeling down in the direction of Red Rock, a left was made at the entry to the popular Haigh Hall grounds.

Though the pace had been nice and gentle, enough of an appetite had been worked up to sample the simple fare of beans on toast and a pot of tea.

Lunch over, the early morning gloom and mist had departed as the group left Haigh Hall via the Aspull exit with a nice freewheel down to the Fingerpost.

The hardest part of getting back to Bolton from here was the short climb up Dicconson Lane to the A6 followed by an easy pace back through Westhoughton. A nice half day ride full of local interest and nobody the worse for it, great stuff
