I AND my fellow Soroptimists were dismayed to learn that, as part of the recently published NHS National Plan, Community Health Councils are to be abolished. As residents of Bolton, we do not want this to happen.
We understand that these were set up as independent bodies to provide the public with a point of contact, to obtain information, deal with problems and complain about any department of the NHS -- that is, an independent watchdog. Perhaps the Government does not want our complaints to have a hearing?
We have two main concerns:
What will replace the CHC?
What will happen to the collective expertise of the members?
Unless the same level of expert and independent help, which is accountable and acceptable to local people, can be provided the Councils should not be abolished.
Bolton people should make their voices heard.
