THE legendary name of the late Syd Lawrence, the famous bandleader, will live on in Bolton when his Orchestra performs at the Albert Halls next month.
It is 33 years since he gathered together a hand-picked group of musicians who were to become known as The Syd Lawrence Orchestra.
Bolton trumpeter Don Banks, who recently passed away, was a member of the band's brass section.
For many years, it was the only big band touring Britain on a regular basis and its musicians have backed many internationally famous names, including Shirley Bassey, Tony Bennett, Matt Munro, Vera Lynn and Johnny Mathis.
Following Syd's retirement in 1994, the band is now in the hands of former head trombonist Chris Dean, who said:
"I have always considered myself lucky to be involved in so many different and interesting musical projects which have enabled me to play at the highest level. But nothing beats the buzz I get when I stand in front of this band".
The Syd Lawrence Orchestra will be in Bolton on Thursday, November 9, at 7.30pm. For booking and more information contact the Albert Halls Ticket & Information Centre, open Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm. Telephone (01204) 334400.
